Adaptive reuse of the historic 7,400 square foot A.M. Byers Wrought Iron Pipe Company headquarters to accommodate the South Side Traveler’s Rest, a hostel, with nine sleeping rooms. We highlighted the building’s wood paneling, doors and ceiling while making the building accessible. We also assisted the owners in a year-long process to receive approvals from the Allegheny County Health Department, which did not recognize hostels as a standard use. In addition, we went through a building permit appeal process which identified cost-saving solutions to bring this building from 1886 up to today’s life-safety standards.
