Oishii Donburi

Donburi, meaning “bowl” in Japanese, is a Japanese style of cuisine that is traditionally served in an oversized rice bowl. Drawing inspiration from urban chic restaurants found in Kyotoand by incorporating wood screens and a variety of lighting strategies, the design for Oishii Donburi creates a Far Eastern style environment set within a 19th century western structure.

Providing both free-standing tables and counter seating, patrons are treated to a full view of the display kitchen as they watch their meals being prepared. Indirect lighting highlights the building’s exposed brick walls and original pressed metal ceiling while a row of simple glass bowls are nested into the wood soffit above the counter. The bowls not only double as light fixture shades, but also complete the motif to this unique and intimate dining space.
